Immanuel Lutheran Church and School

2014 Capital Campaign Case Statement

Imagine for a moment that you are driving down Alessandro Boulevard.  As you reach the bend where the boulevard turns into Central Avenue, you slow to stop at the light that has just turned red.  You’ve done this drive so many times before that you can do it in your sleep, but this time you are startled at what you see -- actually, at what you don’t see.

There on the corner of 5455 Alessandro Boulevard is… nothing.  No church with a cross that reaches several stories high, proclaiming Christ to our neighbors.  No schools that excel in educating our kids and teaching them the love of Jesus.  No playground with joyful children or a roadrunner on a ball wall to remind us of our past accomplishments on Field Day.  No courtyards with school moms or Sunday worshipers sipping their coffees, enjoying a moment of fellowship.

Imagine for a moment that Immanuel never existed.  That is too radical of an idea to even consider, isn’t it? Immanuel has been an integral part of the fabric of our lives and our community for over 100 years!  Our church and schools are thriving, and so by God’s grace, we have the opportunity to imagine something completely different!  We imagine that Immanuel will Empower our Mission to make an even greater impact in our community and the world!

God’s Call

Who We Are

God has given Immanuel a clear and compelling mission: to Experience God’s Presence, Equip God’s People, and Engage the World with the Love of Jesus Christ.  Take one step onto our campus, and you can see that this mission is part of our DNA.  Through inspiring worship, excellence in education, and passionate outreach, we believe that each and every day God is using us to change our world.

God’s Provision

How We Got Here

Today’s ministry stands on the amazing legacy handed down to us by previous generations of Immanuel families and friends.  They boldly stepped out in faith, trusting in God’s provision to do immeasurably more than they could ever imagine.  By faith, they gathered for their first worship service in 1909.  By faith, they started a school in 1956 to invest in the future of Riverside’s children. Soon Immanuel outgrew their Magnolia Avenue facilities and so in 1964 they purchased and built on Alessandro Boulevard.  By faith, Immanuel saw that our community desperately needed a quality Christian preschool, and so in 1992 they built one.  Over and over again, God called previous generations of Immanuel families and friends to step out in faith to accomplish His mission in our community.  With great faith and vision, they were faithful in answering God’s call.

God’s Direction

Our Compelling Next Chapter

God is at work once again, asking us to take a step of faith.  By investing in our mission, He is directing us to empower our ministry for a new generation.  We are answering His call by undertaking a capital campaign called Empower Our Mission!  We have identified five areas of ministry in which we want to strategically invest $1.65 million:

1) Outreach.  We will tithe 10% of our campaign to help fund three of our mission partners.  We will support Path of Life Homeless Ministries, Foster Care Ministries, and Mission: Haiti.  Benefit: changed lives for disadvantaged in our community and the world.   Investment: 10% of our campaign.  We’ve set a challenge goal of $165K!

2) School.  Our elementary school needs to enhance its environment in order to continue to provide educational excellence.  We will redesign our computer lab, refurbish classrooms, create a teacher’s lounge, and improve our playground field.  Benefit: teachers who are motivated to educate and students who are inspired to excel in the 21st Century.  Investment: $300K.

3) Sanctuary.  Our church is in need of upgrades as well as a chancel redesign.  We will re-carpet the entire sanctuary and improve our chancel in a way that honors the integrity of both worship services.  Benefit: worshipers who are inspired to praise our Triune God, offering Him our very best in response to His grace. Investment: $300K.

4) Kitchen.  Our kitchen is not currently approved to be able to run major events in our fellowship hall or serve a hot lunch program for our preschool or elementary school.  We will renovate our kitchen to enable service for our entire Immanuel community.  Benefit: healthy lunches for healthier kids as well as Immanuel meals to enhance our fellowship together.  Investment: $200K

5) Legacy.  Our building and property is over 40 years old and are in need of major maintenance upgrades.  We will improve our ramps into Graumann Hall and replace its roof.  Our church needs a new heating and cooling system.  Along with other repairs, we will set aside funding for three years of future capital improvements.  Benefit: a safe and beautiful environment for our whole community as well as honoring the legacy handed down to us. Investment: $705K

God’s Challenge

How You Fit In

Imagine again that you are stopped at that red light on Alessandro Boulevard.  As the light turns green, you turn into Immanuel and notice the beautiful new field on which kids are playing soccer.  You get out of your car and the grounds appear impeccably clean and welcoming.  The sanctuary is beautiful and inspiring and the school is abuzz with learning and exploration.  Your destination today is the fellowship hall, where you are attending a luncheon served on white linens.  You can’t wait to see what amazing meal they’ll be serving this time!

As you walk up the new ramp with its elegant wrought iron rails, you pause to look around campus and take it all in.  It’s then that it dawns on you – you helped do all this!  You are one of those faithful Immanuel families or friends who answered God’s call when He challenged us to step out in faith.  You are a part of the history and legacy of this place, and it feels really good.

Together, we can do this!  God is challenging each one of us to help Empower our Mission!
